Darmok is one of our favorite episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In it, the Enterprise goes to meet with an alien culture no one has been able to communicate with before. Captain Picard is beamed down to the planet with the captain of the alien crew, by the alien crew. Despite the Enterprise crew's best efforts, they can't beam him back. He and the alien captain eventually learn to communicate with each other. The alien race speaks completely by metaphor. Without knowing their history, their stories, it is near impossible to understand them. Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra is one of the stories Captain Picard learns about them. It is about two people, enemies, who come together to fight a monster. In so doing, they become friends. Picard then shares a similar story - that of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, from Earth's history.
My husband and I are incredibly like-minded. We love the same things, and have passed that on to our children. We have a family culture that we absolutely love and wouldn't give up for anything. A lot of the conversation that goes on in our house is hard for someone that doesn't love all the same things we do to understand. As our children proudly state, "We're a family of geeks!"
In this blog I will be sharing tidbits of our life. It's more of a journal than anything, but hopefully our extended family and friends will enjoy reading what's going on in our lives.
